The basics

What is a Digital Signature Certificate?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure digital key — stored on a FIPS-certified USB crypto token — issued by a licensed Certifying Authority. It carries your identity in encrypted form and lets you sign documents online with the same legal standing as a handwritten signature under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Each certificate records the holder's name, the issue and expiry dates, and the issuing authority — here, Capricorn CA, licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), Government of India. Class 3 is now the standard certificate for almost all government and business filings in India.

Good to know: As per CCA security rules, a DSC can only be downloaded to and stored on a USB crypto token — this keeps your private key from being copied or misused.
3

Class 3 DSC

The current standard for individuals, organisations and government bodies — for document signing, GST, ITR, ROC, e-Tendering and import/export, effective from 1 January 2021.

D

DGFT DSC

A Directorate General of Foreign Trade certificate used by organisations for foreign-trade activity on the DGFT portal. Signing-only, 1 or 2 year validity.

2

Class 2 — discontinued

Phased out from 1 January 2021 as per CCA guidelines. All earlier Class 2 uses are now served by Class 3.

Answers

Digital Signature Certificate FAQs

Clear, up-to-date answers to the questions people ask most before buying a DSC.

What is a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?
A Class 3 DSC is a secure digital key, stored on a USB crypto token, issued by a CCA-licensed Certifying Authority. It carries your identity in encrypted form and lets you sign documents online with the same legal validity as a handwritten signature under the IT Act, 2000. Class 3 is the highest-assurance certificate and is now the standard for almost all government and business portals in India.
How much does a Class 3 DSC cost in India?
Class 3 DSC prices are set by the Certifying Authority, not the government, and typically range from about ₹900 to ₹3,500 depending on the type (Signing or Combo), holder (Individual or Organisation), validity (1, 2 or 3 years) and whether a USB token is included. A signing-only certificate is the most affordable; a Sign + Encrypt (Combo) certificate costs more. The exact, all-inclusive price is shown on the secure application before you pay.
How long does it take to get a DSC?
With Aadhaar eKYC, most Class 3 DSC applications are approved the same day — often within an hour of completing verification. Once approved, the certificate can be downloaded immediately; for new applications, the FIPS-certified USB token is dispatched to your address.
Which documents are required to apply for a DSC?
For an individual DSC you need your PAN, Aadhaar, a passport-size photograph, plus an email ID and Aadhaar-linked mobile number for OTP and video verification. Organisation and DGFT DSC additionally need the company's registration proof and an authorisation letter. The process is fully paperless.
What's the difference between Signing and Combo (Sign + Encrypt) DSC?
A Signing DSC contains one certificate and is used to digitally sign and authenticate documents — enough for GST, Income Tax, MCA and EPFO filings. A Combo DSC contains two certificates, signing plus encryption, and is required where data must also be encrypted, such as e-Tendering, e-Auction, GeM, ICEGATE, IREPS and NSWS.
What's the difference between Individual and Organisation DSC?
An Individual DSC is issued in a person's own name for personal filings. An Organisation DSC carries the company or entity name along with the authorised signatory and is used for MCA/ROC filings, GST and signing on behalf of the organisation. It requires organisation proof and an authorisation letter.
What is a DGFT DSC and who needs it?
A DGFT DSC is an Organisation certificate used exclusively on the DGFT portal for foreign-trade activity — IEC applications, licences and Certificate of Origin. It's meant for importers and exporters and is not interchangeable with a standard Class 3 DSC.
Is Class 2 DSC still available?
No. As per CCA guidelines, Class 2 certificates were discontinued from 1 January 2021. Class 3 DSC now covers all earlier Class 2 uses, including Income Tax, MCA and GST filings.
What is the validity of a DSC?
A DSC can be issued with a validity of 1, 2 or 3 years as per CCA regulations. Choosing a longer validity lowers the per-year cost and avoids frequent renewals. When it expires, you simply renew online.
Is a USB token mandatory for a DSC?
Yes. As per CCA security guidelines, a Class 3 DSC can only be downloaded to and stored on a FIPS-certified USB crypto token. Since 31 March 2023, only new-series tokens are compatible for downloading certificates. The token keeps the private key from being copied or misused.
Do I have to be physically present for verification?
No. Verification is completed online through Aadhaar/PAN based eKYC and a short recorded video, done from your phone or computer. There is no need to visit an office.
How do I renew an expired or expiring DSC?
Renewal is done fully online and is usually faster than a fresh application. Apply before your certificate expires to avoid downtime on your filings; if you already have a valid token you can often reuse it. A DSC cannot be extended once expired — you would issue a new one.
Can foreign nationals or foreign organisations get a DSC?
Yes. Foreign Individual and Foreign Organisation certificates are available for overseas users and entities, with document attestation as required. Additional delivery charges apply for shipping tokens outside India.
On which portals can I use my Class 3 DSC?
A Class 3 DSC works across major Indian portals including Income Tax e-filing, GST, MCA21/MCA V3 (ROC), EPFO, DGFT and ICEGATE, plus e-Tendering, e-Procurement, e-Auction, GeM, IREPS, NSWS and Trademark/Patent filings.
What if my DSC is lost or the token stops working?
A certificate stored on a lost or damaged token cannot be recovered, because the private key never leaves the token. You would apply for a fresh DSC. If a certificate is compromised, request revocation from the Certifying Authority immediately.
Do you offer bulk or reseller pricing?
Yes. For higher volumes we offer customised rates. Email info@dsc.net.in with your requirement and our team will respond within one working day.
